PM2.5 - Air quality in the Upper Rhine in 2018

This map represents the result of an air quality modelling in 2018 on the Upper Rhine. The annual average amount of fine particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm in µg/m³ is represented according to a categorisation whose values are calibrated around the regulatory limit values of the three countries.

In the Upper Rhine area, the main sources of PM2.5 emissions are the residential and tertiary sectors and road transport. The regulatory limit values in force are the following for the annual average: Germany and France: 25 µg/m³, Switzerland: 10 µg/m³. The World Health Organisation's guide value is 10 µg/m³ as an annual average.

PM2.5 concentrations are fairly homogeneous along the Rhine valley, generally varying from 9 µg/m³ to 15 µg/m³, reaching locally more than 20 µg/m³ along the major roads. The mountainous areas are more spared, with levels not exceeding 8 µg/m³ on average per year, with the exception of the main valleys and certain inhabited areas likely to be equipped with main or supplementary wood heating systems.

On the scale of the Upper Rhine, 2950 km² would be exposed to exceeding the World Health Organisation's guide value of 10 µg/m³ for the annual average, i.e. 14% of the territory.
