PM2,5 particulate matter emissions per 500m grid cell in the Upper Rhine region (2021)

Produced as part of the Interreg Upper Rhine Atmo-Rhena PLUS project, this map shows PM2.5 fine particle emissions in the Upper Rhine region in 2021.

Limiting air pollutant emissions is the most important lever for reducing pollutant concentrations in the atmosphere. Air pollutants are gaseous compounds or particles that have a negative impact on air quality and harm human health and the environment. Their negative effects are not limited to the area close to the emission sources, but can spread in the atmosphere over hundreds of kilometres, and sometimes even globally.

This map shows PM2.5 emissions in kilograms per 500-metre grid in the Upper Rhine region. The areas with the highest emissions are concentrated along major urban and transport routes, highlighting the influence of residential areas and traffic on air quality. High emission levels are particularly visible in urban areas such as Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Offenburg, Baden-Baden, Colmar, Mulhouse and Freiburg im Breisgau, but also in all towns and villages in the plain, represented by dots on the map, or originating in the densely populated valleys of the Vosges or the Black Forest. This distribution mainly reflects the use of wood energy in housing, with higher consumption in areas where climatic conditions or housing characteristics require more heating, or in areas close to wood resources.

The static map in PDF format is available at a scale of 500m. The data is accessible as open data only at the scale of EPCI, Kreis and Cantons.
